Learning Centres’ Library Services

Our Learning Centres are located on all major campuses and our staff can help you to find the books, journals, videos and electronic resources you need for your learning.

The Learning Centres offer you a safe, comfortable study space where you can:

  • use a variety of online resources through our website or check your email
  • have a coffee and read the paper or the latest magazines,
  • create and print your assignments
  • access books and DVDs from all of our learning centres and libraries.
  • Work collaboratively with other students

You can use the computers for internet searching, e-learning, as well as common office software. Staff can also help you to use the computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers and other facilities.

If the resource you need is located on another campus we can arrange for delivery to a campus that suits you.

Borrowing resources

The Library services team can help you by:

  • providing advice, assistance and training in finding and using learning resources,
  • identifying and obtaining resources from elsewhere where information needs cannot be met from existing collections
  • providing equipment and expertise for accessing, preparing and presenting learning resources.

We have more than 200,000 learning resources distributed across our many campus libraries. Most of these are books, but they also include 10,000 videos and 3,000 journal titles.

All Polytechnic students and staff are entitled to borrow library material. You can:

  • borrow up to 15 items at a time (limits may vary depending on item type)
  • borrow most books and magazines for 3 weeks. DVDs, videos and special collections have shorter loan periods.
  • return borrowed items to any of our libraries no matter where you borrowed it.
  • renew your loans by phone, email, in person or do it yourself on the catalogue
  • place holds on items that are currently on loan
  • request that an item be sent from any of our libraries to the one which is most convenient to you. We also post resources to students who are studying off campus and are not easily able to get to a library.

We use TALIS (Tasmanian Automated Library Information System) as our catalogue system. With TALIS you can also check your loan record, place holds on resources, email details of resources to yourself and send messages to library staff.

Conditions of use

Before you can borrow you must have a student card or a library card. You apply for a student card through the client services counter on any campus. If a student card is not available within a few days it is possible to get a temporary student library card from the campus library. These can be used for up to six weeks.

Please return borrowed material by the due date. We do send overdue notices, but failure to receive a notice does not remove your obligation to return items on time.

Please note that charges may apply to items that are overdue and must be paid before further borrowing. In particular, special collections attract a $1.00 a day charge for late return.

You will also be invoiced for the replacement cost of items that are long overdue and if the account is not settled within a reasonable period the matter is referred to a collection service agency.

Reserving computers

Book a computer online. This service is only available to enrolled students and for selected campuses. Log in is required.
