Regional Students
Are you a Mature Distance Learner? | Are you a Secondary age Distance Learner?
From 2010 the Tasmanian Polytechnic will offer programs in partnership with local Schools and Skills Centres in regional areas. Initially, programs are being offered at Smithton, George Town, Scottsdale, Winnaleah, St Marys, St Helens and Dover.
Discussions are continuing with several other regional areas with a view to developing partnerships for 2011-2012.
During the transition phase local Schools and Skill Centres in other regional areas will continue to offer programs for students aged from 16 to 19 years old. For more information on what options are available in your region you should contact your local School or Skill Centre.
Accommodation and travel options will continue to be available to you if live in these regions, and would prefer to access Polytechnic programs in urban centres.
Trade Training Centres

The Tasmanian Polytechnic is establishing six new Trade Training Centres around the state. The first Trade Training Centres to open and which will be completed towards the end of 2010 will be located in:
- George Town
- Scottsdale
- Bridgewater.
The second round of trade training centres to open will be located at Smithton, Huon Valley and St Helens and be completed towards the end of 2011.
The Polytechnic will be working in partnership with a cluster of high schools and local industry in each of the regions to establish regional skills hubs.
The new facilities will provide more vocational options in trade industries to Years 9-12 students as well as mature-age students from the wider community.
The Trade Training Centre will provide real training for real jobs. Students will be involved in practical training so that they leave the centre with the skills they need to be ready for a job. If you are enrolled in the centre you will get career advice and help in making the move into a job or further training.
The multi-trade facilities will include industry-standard equipment. The Trade Training Centres will offer pre-vocational training for Year 11 and 12 students, with articulation through to higher qualifications in
- Automotive
- Construction
- Plumbing
- Engineering
- Carpentry
- Manufacturing
- Electro-technology
- Forestry.
In some areas training in aquaculture, horticulture and agriculture will also be offered.
If you are interested in doing a trade program at a trade training centre to be located in your region in the future, then contact your local School.
